Fishing
Most fishermen would agree that nothing comes close to the thrill of reeling in your own catch, and in the Capricorn Region there are plenty of opportunities for you to do just this. Whether you enjoy saltwater or freshwater fishing, the opportunities to wet a line do not get much better than those in Central Queensland. Experienced fishermen will love the variety of locations on offer and for the inexperienced there are even fishing charters that will bait your hook!
Freshwater Fishing
In Rockhampton, fish for giant barramundi from the banks of the Fitzroy River, jump in a ‘tinny’ or join in the annual Barra Bounty competition, one of Australia’s most popular tag and release competitions.
Four of Australia’s iconic fish inhabit the waters of the Fitzroy river system. Barramundi can be found in both the fresh and saltwater reaches of the river. Yellowbelly can be located upstream of Rockhampton, Saratoga is native of the Dawson River and Murray Cod is found in the huge Lake Maraboon at Emerald.
The Central Highlands also offer some of the best freshwater fishing in the region. Their immense lakes and dams are home to some great Australian catches like the Murray Cod, Yellowbelly and Barramundi.
Saltwater Fishing
Another tempting option is to cast a line in from one of the Capricorn Coast’s long stretches of beach. You are sure to find a quiet spot where the fish are biting.
If you prefer fishing deeper water, book yourself onto a bare boat fishing charter and have a local take you to the best fishing hotspots. An experienced skipper can show you the ropes and supply you with tackle, bait and a delicious BBQ lunch.
