5 things to do these school holidays

Camping, snorkeling, swimming, bush walking, fishing, getting up close to animals and so much more, we have it all in the Capricorn Region, Southern Great Barrier Reef.

1. Dip into the Yeppoon Lagoon

The days are warming up so it’s time for swimming! The kids will love making a splash in Yeppoon Lagoon. Enjoy a picnic or cook up some snags on the BBQ and enjoy lunch with views over to the Keppel Islands. There’s also a playground and skate park nearby.

2. Escape to an island

Take the family for a trip to Great Keppel Island in the Great Barrier Reef and watch the kids’ excitement as they snorkel and come face-to-face with brightly coloured corals, turtles, fish and marine life. You may even spot the Humpback Whales as they are head south back home.

3. Close encounters of the animal kind

Head to Koorana Crocodile Farm for a tour. You even get to hold a crocodile at the end! Have you ever eaten crocodile meat? Well here’s the perfect opportunity when you have lunch in the restaurant.

Discover the wonder of stalactites and fossils when you go on a tour of the Capricorn Caves. Although they are small, as tiny as your thumb, you may hear and see the microbats that live in the Caves. For the more adventurous there's adventure caving!

The kids will love patting the animals at Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary. They have baby emu’s, kangaroos and a Koala joey. Make sure your there for the 1pm animal show.

4. Reel ém in

Bait your lines, enjoy a day out fishing for barramundi in the mighty Fitzroy River Rockhampton  or enjoy a day out on the reef in the Keppel Islands. There's great fishing on the beach at Causeway Lake, you may even catch a flathead or some whiting or try your luck with the crab pots in the lake.

5. Get back to nature

Pack up the kids; it’s camping time. Carnarvon Gorge has pretty much everything you could want in a camping trip. There are wallabies, possums, platypus, birds and more scenic walks than you can shake a stick at. After a day fun filled with adventure relax by the campfire and enjoy delicious roasted marshmallows.
